Stress-free domain name transfers

As we have said before, your domain name – or URL – is the online version of your street address. But what happens when, for one reason or another, it needs to be transferred?

Can it be done without harming the integrity of your brand?

In a word, yes, as long as you follow these five steps.

Do your homework

Domain name transfers can be a bit tricky, and can throw up issues before you even start. So the first step is to check that your domain name is currently active – and is at least 60 days old. You also need to check with whomever you registered the domain name with to see what the rules, regulations or any penalties may be. Doing this homework first means you are less likely to run into problems later.

Check all your details

In Australia, go to whois.com.au and key in your current URL to ensure all the contact details are correct – especially the email address because this is how you will get information about authorisation. It may be listed under your web host, so make sure that they will send you any notifications ASAP. No doubt, they will be involved in the process anyway.

Check your authorisation code

You will need this code to transfer your domain name – it protects you against your URL being claimed by competitors and other security breaches. You should be able to get the code from the company you initially registered your domain name with. Make sure you give yourself enough time to contact them and get the code – otherwise you will have to postpone the transfer and perhaps compromise your brand’s integrity online.

Check emails

After submitting your application to transfer, keep an eye out on your email inbox and this is where any notifications will arrive and they will likely be accompanied by the steps you have to take to finalise the transfer.

Get started with your new domain

If you’ve followed the steps properly, your new domain should be ready to be unlocked. Just make sure that you send your transfer order to your new registrar immediately, otherwise you are leaving the URL up for grabs. Stay on top of any notifications.
